Now That You Know WHO, and a bit of How MUCH, Ask Yourself WHY…
When your hard-earned money leaves your field of vision, or (if it’s deducted before you get the paycheck) never really enters into it — is it still your money, or in other’s stewardship for your benefit?
Let’s keep looking at how many people rely on the fact of others’ passivity after money has been extracted from their personal possession, by the US Government, specifically (not state-level):
- If you had a banker, real estate investor, mechanic, babysitter, housecleaner (for those who can afford this), or any other person you repeatedly gave business to — or anyone else, engaged in criminal activity, charging for services not rendered, or pooling funds with others to run a brothel, or run drugs, or kidnap and traffick in children, or child porn — would you voluntarily continue doing business with the person? — or would you fire them & report it?
- How about if they were trying to disenfranchise a sector of population based on their chromosomes?
- How about if they were working towards setting up a system of eugenics — while continuing to smile, look professional, have a Ph.D., and MBA — or a Rev. — as a title. Would you continue doing business with them?
- How about if they were simply a fake charity, claiming to help the poor — but were actually robbing the poor or hungry, or molesting them. This actually has happened before — has it not?
“Oh– but surely those were just the bad apples, the exceptions, the bad guys. The system, overall, was still a good one!”
Really? Is it? How Do You Know — DO you know this?
For those who remember the movie, When Harry met Sally (Meg Ryan, Billie Crystal), there is a famous scene in a diner, and the punch line is:
How Do You Know?
And after a little demonstration (Sally/Meg Ryan) asks again, basically (as I recall it, anyhow):
Think about it.
Do the math —
How Do You Know?
Let’s look at human levels of collective denial:
Sally Albright: Most women at one time or another have faked it.
Harry Burns: Well, they haven’t faked it with me.
Sally Albright: How do you know?
Harry Burns: Because I know.
Sally Albright: Oh. Right. Thats right. I forgot. You’re a man.
Harry Burns: What was that supposed to mean?
Sally Albright: Nothing. It’s just that all men are sure it never happened to them and all women at one time or other have done it so you do the math
I’ve been giving several little “demonstrations” of “faking it” — what happens with — not just $150 million (a year) dedicated marriage/fatherhood funding or $10 million (a year) access visitation funding, but also of the about $4 BILLION a year (Child Support/Family Support), where it goes and how the flow ends up soaked up in organizations which blend into the morass of missing incorporation. Others, spreading their seed, end up in the hands of evangelical conservative order church-planting STAFF, from which, networking with their affiliates out of state, the church website is used to lecture women how to control their men — they are, after all, the neck to his head, right? (And other gibberish).
How can someone who’s spouse’s hands are around their neck, squeezing it, be the “neck” that somehow emotionally turns his head towards good?
Well, the fact is — the faucet here is in the “on” position, and you are doing business with the “Religious Reich” and the “New Age Left” (cults) — so the question is, how to either repair the plumbing, or turn it off. Unless you have some reserves we don’t know about.
If the plumbing in your home sprung a leak — would you fix it? Well suppose it were spouting dollars? Would you be concerned more about water damage, or about the reservoir level?
What’s happened is, we have become too detached from these matters, or unable to follow up thoroughly. Many people are counting on this sense of detachment from the public to continue — or, have plans how to divert the energies (into a Good Cop/Bad Cop diversion) if the word gets out.
My plan is that the word should continue to get out.
What else? Where else?
OK, you say — but “this doesn’t all go to religious groups” (well, a lot more does than you may realize, even if it FIRST goes to someone who looks neutral, and professional. However, generally speaking, someone who is in the field of marriage therapy will have some form of religious belief, whether or not traditional. It appears that Carolyn Curtis was already an “Attender,” and was she ever happy to realize what expert networkers churches are, when one has something they need! This is about the start of California Healthy Marriages — THE largest healthy marriage grant at the time ($11 million of five years, as I recall). Taken from a SmartMarriages conference site. Backtracked from a Virginia church staff to here:
• How We Got Started – Carolyn Curtis, Sacramento
Sacramento is the state capitol of California.
But this neutral professional person is not stupid — and understands the power of faith-based influence and networking, for sure — and that’s the story of an $11 million California Healthy Marriages/ Sacramento Healthy Marriages/ Relationship Training Center, etc. — which I took the time to track some on this blog. And one of their trainees was “Moonie,” too — which I proved. Right here — there is a well-traveled highway among these groups, internet-based, conference-connected — and I’ve named a primary conference where they connect and collaborate to get more grants, start more initiatives, and peddle more training programs and certifications.
I’m pasting this in here: please realize that what you don’t take time to find out about DOES affect your bottom line, and mine. We are in this country together –and if it’s OK for a theocracy in the near future, then hey — go for it, go back to sleep. If it’s NOT — then start with reversing that faith-based executive order, and Ending Welfare Privatization As We Knew It (block grants to the states through TANF). Here’s the folk tale of this $11 million (green background):
CAROLYN CURTIS AND HER MISSION IN SACRAMENTO
I haven’t shared a “how we got started” story in a while. I know these are helpful and inspirational. I will add this to the how to get started page. Bravo to Carolyn. – diane
Healthy Marriage Project
October 13, 2010
by Brian BakerThere are many humble saints at Trinity Cathedral that do remarkable things for our community. One of them is Carolyn Curtis who started an amazing non-profit that strengthens the relationships of couples as well as enhances the skills of parents. Much of there work is focused on at-risk populations. I knew of Carolyn’s work, but did not realize the role played by Trinity Cathedral as Carolyn was working to make her dream a reality. I recently asked her to write about how she got the Healthy Marriage Project started. Here’s her story:
Trinity Cathedral and the Healthy Marriage Project: A partnership that has helped hundreds of families in our communityOur journey began in 2003, after over 30 years of practice as a marriage and family therapist, I went to a conference that changed my life.
Which goes to show that even Episcopalians (& marriage therapists) are subject to transformational rebirth experiences….they will be from this point forth emotionally bonded and loyal to whoever provided them with this sense of a life-changing experience, until someone else (or another “awakening”) shakes or forces them out of it. Life-changing experiences can be positive and have warm fuzzy (or clear) and euphoric associations or they can — like domestic violence, or the family courts after domestic violence — be traumatic, shocking, terrorizing etc. — and still be life-changing.
So long as the Carolyn Curtises are never brought face-to-face on an equal level with the women in my situation, they will continue to carry whatever agenda was transfused into them by their life-changing experience. And until this happens, they need to keep their mitts off public funding: They aren’t going to be thinking straight — and they WILL be used. They also naturallly enjoy the aspect of feeling used and useful.
Add this combo to religion, free money, and the profit motive, and you have, literally, a powerful, socialized cocktail that should be kept out of the hands of the non-immunized!
Carolyn Curtis is evidently an Episcopalian, with apparently all that entails. She appears to be privileged and has been employed or self-employed. In her spare time, she attends church (and — it shows below, sings in a choir that toured England).
Typically a little more educated, intellectual, and the churches are going to be sometimes progressive and politically correct.
This particular church being in the capital of California — I took a quick look at “Trinity Cathedral” and some of its programs (particularly as it’s embraced with open arms such a regressive one as this healthy marriage/responsible fatherhood movement) and found their ‘SoJust” pdf (not so overtly advertised) — and with it, the involvement of PICO/ACT:
The “ACT” in PICO/ACT stands for “Area Churches Together”:
The PICO is something else:
| PICO National Network | CA | 2010 | $10,481,627 | 990 | 35 | 94-2206497 |
| PICO National Network | CA | 2009 | $9,588,656 | 990 | 28 | 94-2206497 |
| PICO National Network | CA | 2008 | $11,072,132 | 990 | 31 | 94-2206497 |
| PICO National Network | CA | 2007 | $9,608,000 | 990 | 32 | 94-2206497 |
It’s actually based in Oakland.
To understand PICO one needs, in part, to understand its origins, which were in the 1940s IAF/ Saul Alinsky. Whereas IAF had a “three-years and out” policy regarding churches, with a change in leadership, the shift was made to literally strengthen churches themselves as communication action groups & change agents, i.e., to establish and retain relationships with the churches, long-term. PICO came from this. PICO’s goal is power for social change. If this power is going to come from within the religious communities, long-term; they are going to have to down-play violence against (or “colonialization of”) women IN the same religious communities — long-term! Get it?
Wikipedia is a starter on this IAF history information, if it’s new territory. Please read the following paragraph twice — preferably, aloud — because the conflict inherent in going to churches to address issues such as racism, and colonialism showing up here, also shows up in the grants-grabbing by churches for the marriage promotion.
(specifically an urban — or industrial areas — issues, and very understandable) is also a factor in the wide appeal of the “marriage/fatherhood promotion” to inner-city, black/African-American populations, despite the fact it’s inherently sexist. . . but it has wide appeal)
******The Industrial Areas Foundation (IAF) is a national community organizing network established in 1940 by Saul Alinsky. IAF provides training and consultation, furnishes organizers, and develops national strategy for its affiliated broad-based community organizations. There are currently 57 IAF affiliates functioning in 21 states, Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany and Australia. It describes its chief purpose as power and its chief product as social change.
I cannot (at least, yet) “Tweet” or “Facebook” this information. I just posted approximately 1400 Marriage awards — not by a long shot all of them — and have profiled dozens of them, accurately. They take money and run (don’t comply with the tax law).
Are you able to read many paragraphs in a row — about the Industrial Areas Foundation, about how it morphed into PICO, about how this ties into the Episcopalian Church in particular, about how this particular Episcopalian Cathedral in Sacramento knew a good thing when it saw it — and helped Carolyn Curtis go for the Healthy Marriage/Responsible Fatherhood grants (even though this same church is actually progressive, in favor of same-sex marriage (which typical fatherhood proponents aren’t) and in fact, the Episcopalian church — at least some of it — has already ordained lesbians and (probably) homosexuals? Why would they go for a movement at its heart, typically stands against that which they stand for?
In addition, this information is interesting in its own right. Failing to understand it is to fail to understand a significant portion of American history and the current political landscape.
Will you do this for a good cause and think about them? I hope so, because if someone doesn’t start thinking harder about this, we are in for a far worse future for half the human population here — the childbearing half. I myself have plenty of other things I’d rather be doing also, but being a mother (and mother of daughters), I feel it’s time to address these outrages — which they are.

CUT it OUT!! — NO MORE!!! Federal HHS Grants to: Evangelical Church Plants, Abuse-Excusers, New Age Gurus, Spiritual Psychologists — ALL of Them! (Publ. Oct. 12, 2012)
THIS POST TITLE IS:
CUT it OUT!! — NO MORE!!! Federal HHS Grants to: Evangelical Church Plants, Abuse-Excusers, New Age Gurus, Spiritual Psychologists — ALL of Them! (Publ. Oct. 12, 2012) (case-sensitive short-link ends: “-1aZ”)
(Post Title w/ Shortlink only added to the body of the post added ten years later… Well, April 9, 2022. And I added the date to the Title itself (a habit established since then), limited the width to 700px, added the dark red border, and hope for the best. One of the most significant tables (on Grant 90FM0001, which changed handlers (and states) mid-way, I added some background color because it sitll extends past the right margin. For those who will be more offended by reading Bible verses than by outrageous uses of federal grants and the laughable (literally) pretexts for doing so, you’re forewarned. I quote Bible — but as a contrast to what many faith-based (sic) grantees’ owners and religious networks are (a) saying and (b) doing.
And, read the title — these grants aren’t limited to only the religious. Anyone with a mind to exploit the opportunity seems welcome.
Personally, I find it sickening, as I found marriage to be one of THE most dangerous undertakings I did: and I’ve driven cross-country alone, taken long-distance (multi-state) bike trip alone, and (as of this update) got into a car with what would fit in it (at age 65…) — because I had to get out of the state fast and had already been put out of my housing — and drove East (alone) until several states were between me and (by then, my own) family line; only stopping when I was ready to, and in state I’d NEVER lived in before and had only one known contact in. //LGH
I got really irritated on looking a few of these groups pushing marriage curricula, and networking with their out-of-state-buddies (and HHS), and basically so long as the grants come, who cares about the integrity of the subject matter?
I’m a woman. I also am a mother.
The problem is Bipartisan — and neither political party is my friend right now. Hypocrites!
Have you ever heard of “The RIDGE PROJECT” in Ohio? I looked them up. You should too. there’s a reason it’s the wife’s name as principal grantee (principal investigator on the grant) here, and not the husband’s. Using that DUNS# to get the total:
| Recipient Name | City | State | ZIP Code | County | DUNS Number | Sum of Awards |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| RIDGE Project, Inc | Defiance | OH | 43512-2575 | DEFIANCE | 141622105 | $ 8,543,666 |
| RIDGE Project, Inc | Defiance | OH | 43512-2575 | HENRY | 141622105 | $ 5,909,994 |
Why would a single entity with the same DUNS# in just one (probably small) Ohio town show up on TAGGS under two different county names (Defiance, Henry). Hmmm. Just asking (I asked this question during 2022 update when I noticed it.//LGH)
Why should this family receive $13 million of federal grants (not even loans), and my kids forfeit overnight, basically 100% of their child support arrears (about $10,000 at the time) during custody switch, and me – my self-sustaining profession and contact with them — because our Administration has bought the gender-based value system? Huh? I committed no crime, neither did my kids.
But this woman’s husband (below) was in jail. I guess that means he can be used. Forming this nonprofit, and doing as they were told, helped provide for her family.
Guess what he was in jail for…
To make this narrow, I”m leaving out the “Grantee Name,” all are RIDGE Project, Inc

(Without going into more detail, this as an unusual case, and I did read a lot about it. There’s also family strife between Catherine and her family over the matter). I could be reading it wrong — but if a judge puts a man, a father, in jail at the state level — then why should a federal agency come in and essentially communicate to him, his wife, and his kids — that’s OK, we don’t really consider it legit? and pay off Mom to start this nonprofit promoting fatherhood? From the Linkedin on C. Tijerina:
Nonprofit; 11-50 employees; Individual & Family Services industry
January 2000 – Present (12 years 10 months)
The RIDGE Project is a faith-based organization serving fathers, families and youth** in Ohio. Our mission is to establish a path of honor, discipline and integrity by way of education, motivation and inspiration in order to lead families into a future defined by hope, peace and righteousness for generations to come. We currently serve over 30,000 Ohio residents annually.
**$13 million focused on fathers for ONE nonprofit?
It’s also openly religious and into training, of course. This is what I mean by “proselyte.”
“The RIDGE Project offers support to other like-minded organizations, and provides training to other family-oriented programs. Additionally, we strive to inform individuals, communities, the media and local and national policy makers of the importance of strong families. Our outreach is founded on Jesus Christ and based upon biblical principles. We focus on reaching people where they are and training them to address the everyday challenges they face”
They’re working on the store/merchandise page (note: I blogged this earlier, I think. It had items for sale. Maybe their income has warranted a website facelift?)
Here’s another federal grantee in Tennessee (First Things First, Baumgardner) also related to NARME (where they help get each other HHS marriage, etc. grants), helping promote other grantee recipients. I caught two on this page, including Tijerna:
Scribes, Pharisees, Hypocrites (bipartisan)! House Ways ‘n Means re: Obama, Jobs and TANF
Ok, that’s it! I’ve had enough– and by now,You should’ve too!
House Ways & Means — In my inbox today:
I’ve been getting press releases from the part of the US Government that Appropriates Money to some of the programs that helped drive (women like me) BACK on welfare, and keeps our lives at risk, while promising others that these policies would help reduce welfare. By now, I know how some of the people running these programs actually live — which is off welfare diversions to nonprofits (grants-grabbing) that usually are selling something for-profit and nationally distributed, is franchised, and that no one needs. You wouldn’t believe the level of business available in those, too.
Before and After: Jobs Down, Poverty and Government Dependence Up During the Obama Administration
Economic Data Is a Stark Reminder of Obama Administration’s Failed Policies
Before Obama* After Obama** Change Jobs (Payroll Employment) 136.8 million 133.5 million (9/2012) – 3.3 million Not in Labor Force 79.5 million 88.7 million (9/2012) + 9.2 million
People in Poverty 39.8 million 46.2 million (CY 2011) + 6.4 million Welfare Recipients (TANF) 4.0 million 4.5 million (12/2011) + 0.5 million Disability Recipients (SSI/SSDI) 12.1 million (12/08) 14.0 million (8/2012) + 1.9 million Food Stamp Recipients (SNAP) 28.2 million 46.7 million (7/2012) + 18.5 million
[This chart will be repeated below…]
What’s in it for those keeping us in the programs, or in the courts, or in jail, or in God knows where, or on the edge of our seats — is all too often someone’s executive directorship, and deductible travel expenses, retirement plan (i.e., royalties off that curricula) and/or some real estate. The people it’s least good for are those it’s allegedly helping the most.
To add injury to insult, as I mentioned last (few) posts — what’s in it for some of them is extra credit with God — or their chosen gurus: Church plants, personal growth transformation, and more. These are not the “big players” they are who the big players like to use, because they know who’s a sucker for a captive audience, sometimes a Ph.D. in Sociology, or professional status (and a pension plan) at a think tank — like Brookings, The Urban Institute, Heritage Foundation, Annie E. Casey, etc. (those aren’t all think tanks obviously, but I’m sure you catch my drift). Today, I’m also going to bring up “ALEC.”
But — I know what’s behind the complaint about more people on Food Stamps, Welfare etc. — there are profits to be made off the poor, and particularly since the privatization of welfare.
But no one seems to be afraid of THAT kind of welfare-queen (or king)…. the kind who drank the Kool-Aid, bought into the Franchise, and think it’s JUST FINE to run these programs year after year!
Scribes (always writing things up), Pharisees (“Defending our Father’s House” Faith-Based Initiatives, etc.), and Hypocrites (both of the above, plus some….) . . .
Jesus (the same guy quoted as saying “the poor you always have with you,” which seems to be true, no matter how many promises to eradicate or win the war on poverty) said it here, and like this (OK, allegedly said it like this.). In fact in Matthew 23, it looks like he started out just teaching, and then (on reflection) launched into cursing (“Woe unto you!”) those categories. I kind of feel like that sometimes, when I hear this manner of talk:
9And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven.10Neither be ye called masters: for one is your Master, even Christ. 11But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant. 12And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.
13But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in. 14Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows’ houses, and for a pretence make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation.
15Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves.
It’s said three times in a row, for effect. Then he calls them “blind guides” and says it three MORE times! 7 X “Woe unto you,” I believe settles the matter. 3X (scribes, pharisees, hypocrites) 1 x “Blind Guides” (in the center) + 3 more (scribes, pharisees, hypocrites). I think it sends a wake-up message…..
And while Jesus was talking in terms of the temple, prophets, religious law, I have NO problem correlating the terms to what some of our politicians are doing and saying. They basically imply they can guide us to the land of milk and honey, the manna, the better country we all want –if only we’ll do it their way. And yes, they ARE devouring widow’s houses (my mother was a widow — and like many people whose family law cases — through TANF Purpose IV to “promote two-parent families”, etc. — not only OUR houses, but our ELDERs’ houses were devoured. Our kids’ futures, those inheritances were, where there were any at all. And if there was no family wealth — what about taking people’s precious TIME while threatening to (or actually) literally taking their kids?
Anecdotal: A woman’s parents in Connecticut mortgaged their home to help their daughter when she was extorted $10,000 a month — that’s in ONE month — for supervised visitation to see her son, who was being molested, several authorities said. This was brought up during the judicial confirmation hearings of a certain GAL (politically favorable & diverse for having helped legitimize same-sex marriage in CT/Maureen McCabe). Eli Newberger, M.D. testified in protest — I have it over at http://thefamilycourtmoneymachine.blogspot.com (I believe as even a separate page, plus a post)
Look at Recorders’ Deeds & Tax Assessors: (hover link for more text)
So, while not being Jesus, or God, I’m not about to go “woe unto you!” I can definitely say “Whoa, Baby!” and call it like I see it. Hypocrisy. And yes, I am angry. I had better things to do with the last decade!
When (v. 15, Bible quote there) he mentioned that these groups “compass sea and land to make one proselyte” — look, did I, or did I not, point out the clearinghouses, the technical assistance and training centers, and the conferences, etc. These are forming proselytes to the HHS grants-stream in order to market social-science-engineering to the public!
Unless you don’t think that groups like NARME or Smartmarriage.com are actually forming proselytes? Or, AZFFC (Fathers & Families Coalition of America) not registered right as a nonprofit, that we can see/at least not when it says it did, 1994), who sucks up to HHS leadership to distribute grants — and I’ve watched some of them ALSO not file, and blogged it here — is one of the good guys?
So, Yes, you heard me — that’s hypocrisy. This is what the same crowd does NOT want you to talk, in addition to how these welfare grants are being used:
MOREOVER, NOT ONLY IS WELFARE MISREPORTED, LOST TRACK OF AND THE “JOBS” CARROT DANGLED OUT IN FRONT OF THE PUBLIC, BUT WHAT’S BEHIND THAT CURTAIN, HEY? WHY ISN’T THERE MORE TALK ABOUT THE REPORTS THAT SHOW CUMULATIVE WEALTH OF GOVERNMENTAL ENTITIES ACROSS THE LAND?
What These Words Really Mean: “National” “Responsible” “Fatherhood” “Clearinghouse” [Published Oct. 10, 2012, with some updates]
Post title (with date published added to the title only in 2019, a standard I now use in the blog):
What These Words Really Mean: “National” “Responsible” “Fatherhood” “Clearinghouse” [Published Oct. 10, 2012, with some updates], short-link ends “-1aN” and OmiGod, why was it 17.7K words long!
In hindsight (see nearby image, taken just now but with Archives set to October, 2012) of how many posts published that month) it was a busy season; I remember also as a personally intense season in my life, and got moreso in the ensuing few months. I also see that the post contains both long quotes (some about the father of American Psychology William James — and his interest in things “psychic,” including psychics) and has some tables of fatherhood grantees, as well as exploring what, in fact, does that four-word phrase represent. AFTER ALL, when the USA sees fit to post a website of resource materials labeled “Fatherhood.gov” (which that clearing house is), it bears looking at — closely! Still up and still funded today, last I looked, and more like it….//LGH June 22, 2019.
PS. I see below I also took on issues and specific entities like new age cults in prison ministries (sic), Santa Monica University + MSIA (Movement for Spiritual Inner Awareness) + Huffington Post (Arianna Huffington got involve in it), John-Roger (The Hulnicks seem to be channeling him…) and so forth. Cult Awareness Network reporting — there’s a lot in this post!
It’s a live issue, has come up in my current posting again, this time in connection with funders of an Early Childhood Development Center at Harvard.
[Posted October 10, 2012; Intro with hindsight added Summer, 2013; Expect two (or more) posts to review and re-state this post and these vital issues as of late October, 2014. See recent comments. ]:
Those words may sound good, but should be interpreted according to usage, and who’s sponsoring the phrase. Questions should be asked: Who and what is the National Responsible Fatherhood Clearinghouse [website: fatherhood.gov]? What has it and corporations using such terms (this language) been doing? how about these corporations’ founders, followers and associates?
Is the marriage/fatherhood movement as seen in its media and programming, financing and expansion itself an expression of a religious cult, or taken as a whole and considering how it’s supported from public funds, a new blend of several old religions packaged as for the public good, when in fact the good (profits) end up in private hands?
How cult-connected are some of the key founders. If leadership does have outside connections with known cults, what about the programs created under such leadership?
And, what’s more, if the answers are yes, what does that say about the federal grants involved? Where is the line between cult influence in grant-making agencies, and those agencies themselves?
[Light-blue background text above added October, 2014.]
There is a close connection with the behavior of cults, i.e., such things as Charlatanism, Intimidation, Coercion, Retaliation for Reporting, and other things which will come up. There are also direct connections with some providers to organizations which are skin-deep cult-connected, outrageously so.
The “Saybrook” background mentioned in this post is also shared, to my understanding, with the institution from which a prime AFCC leader (Board Member, publisher, etc.) Robin Deutsch, Ph.D. of the “Massachusetts School of Professional Psychology.”
The hyper-professionalization of the field of psychology in the United States through through establishing independent professional schools of psychology to escalate pay grades and earn more respect by turning out more Psy.D’s and Ph.D’s, has a history entwined with the emergence of the fatherhood movement in the 1980s, at first as an antidote to the feminism of the 1980s. Bio at that site, at least several lines of it.
For early origins in the United States, see biography of William James, 1842-1910 and acknowledged as the father of American psychology and influential on Freud’s “psychodynamic theories.” (Psyography by Bekah Dillon).
James father’s restlessness and mysticism plus intense attempt to manage and control his sons’ (plural) education, with considerable wealth and mobility seems to be reflected in the field (my opinion) in the field still. He married a wife chosen by his father. William James was “often haunted by an assortment of ailments, accompanied by depression and suicidal thoughts.”
William James was born the eldest of five children to Henry James Sr. and Mary James in New York City on January 11, 1842. Henry James Sr. was an Irish immigrant who was studying theology, philosophy, and mysticism and was well connected with many literary and philosophical celebrities of the time (Pajares, 2002). He devoted himself to his children, especially their education and in 1843, Henry Jr. (Harry) was born in NYC.
The affluent and deeply religious family was headed by a man who often became troubled and sought refuge in different environments. Henry frequently found himself displeased with numerous aspects of life and in the summer of 1843, he moved the family to England (Pajares, 2002). Shortly thereafter, he decided to return to New York City (Pajares, 2002).
The wealth and affluence of the Jameses not only afforded Henry the pleasure of exposing the children to many parts of Western Europe, but also enrolling them in the best schools. In 1852, he enrolled the boys in the Institution Vergnes. Henry, dissatisfied with the school, moved the boys to the Pulling Jenks School. Inspired by the drawing teacher, Mr. Coe, young William developed a deep love for drawing at age eleven (Pajares, 2002). Eventually, Henry removed the boys from Pulling Jenks; it has been speculated that he withdrew the students for fear that Coe would reinforce young William’s talents and destroy Henry’s impact on his son.
Soon enough, Henry became antsy and shifted the family back to Europe. Despite young James’s dismay the family left in the summer of 1855. Until 1858, the children received lessons through private tutors in England and France (Pajares, 2002).
In June of 1858, the family relocated to Newport, Rhode Island and by September, Henry had changed his mind. The family then settled in Geneva. As well as studying with the tutors, the children attended schools in Switzerland and Germany. William James attended the Academy, the precursor to the University of Geneva (Pajares, 2002).
By age 18, James attended schools in five different countries, became familiar with numerous museums and galleries, frequently entertained the guests of his father, including Thoreau, Emerson, Greeley, and Hawthorne, and developed fluency in five different languages (Pajares, 2002). …..[wrote Principles of Psychology, teaching at Harvard] He encouraged various psychological methods, including comparative psychology and the use of various populations as research participants, such as animals, infants, or mentally disabled persons (Schultz and Schultz, 2004)
[I added bold and underline. quote added 10/2014].
Psychology branching out from physiology and philosophy, labs established in 1875 by Wilhelm Wundt (in Germany) and William James (at Harvard). Brief comparison of the two men.
In 1875, a room was set aside for Wundt for demonstrations in what we now call sensation and perception. This is the same year that William James would set up a similar lab at Harvard. We can celebrate that year as the founding of experimental psychology!
In 1879, Wundt assisted his first graduate student at true psychological research — another milestone. In 1881, he started the journal Philosophische Studien. In 1883, he began the first course to be titled experimental psychology. And in 1894, his efforts were rewarded with the official establishment of an “Institute for Experimental Psychology” at Leipzig — the first such in the world. . . .
Among his better known students were Oswald Külpe and Hugo Munsterberg (whom James invited to teach at Harvard), the Russian behaviorists Bekhterev and Pavlov, as well as American students such as Hall (“father” of developmental psychology in America), James McKeen Cattell, Lightner Witmer (founder of the first psychological clinic in the US, at U of Penn), and Wundt’s main interpreter to the English speaking world, E. B. Titchener. Titchener is particularly responsible for interpreting Wundt badly!
Later in his career, Wundt became interested in social or cultural psychology. Contrary to what many believe, Wundt did not think that the experimental study of sensations was the be all and end all of psychology! In fact, he felt that that was only the surface, and additionally that most of psychology was not as amenable to experimental methods.
Instead, he felt that we had to approach cultural psychology through the products it produced — mythology, for example, cultural practices and rituals, literature and art…. He wrote a ten volume Völkerpsychologie, published between 1900 and 1920, which included the idea of stages of cultural development, from the primitive, to the totemic, through the age of heroes and gods, to the age of modern man.
[From the same article, but more on William James, which sheds some light on where we are today]:
James had always shared his father’s interest in mysticism, even in psychic phenomena. This has dampened his reputation among hard-core scientists in the psychological community, but it only endeared him more to the public. In 1897, he published The Will to Believe, and in 1902, Varieties of Religious Experience.
But James was never completely comfortable with being a psychologist, and preferred to think of himself as a philosopher. He is, in fact, considered America’s greatest philosopher, in addition to being the “father” of American psychology!
He was profoundly influenced by an earlier American philosopher, Charles Sanders Peirce, who founded the philosophy of Pragmatism. Pragmatism says that ideas can never be completely proven true or false. Rather, we should be looking to how useful an idea is — how practical, how productive. James called it the “cash value” of an idea! James popularized Pragmatism in books like Pragmatism in 1907 and The Meaning of Truth in 1909. In 1909, he also wrote A Pluralistic Universe, which was part Pragmatism and part an expression of his own beliefs in something not unlike Spinoza’s pantheism.
He had retired from teaching in 1907 because his heart was not was it used to be, not since a mild attack in 1898 when climbing in upstate New York. He did meet Freud when he came to visit Boston in 1909, and was very much impressed. The next year, he went to Europe for his health and to visit his brother Henry, but soon returned to his home in New Hampshire. Two days later, on August 26, 1910, he died in his wife Alice’s arms.
Several of his works were published posthumously, including Some Problems in Philosophy in 1911 and the magnificent Essays in Radical Empiricism in 1912. James’ most famous students included John Dewey, the philosopher often considered the father of modern American education, and Edward Thorndike, whose work with cats opened the door to the Behaviorists.

Radical Pragmatist by Linda Simon (biography of William James) emphasizes his unstable childhood with a controlling, affluent but discontent country-hopping father, and his fascination with spiritualism. He envied the literary success of his brother, the author Henry James. He used mescal, hashish and opium on himself to better understand altered mental states. He hoped to communicate with the dead from beyond the grave:

A new biography portrays William James as a man who subjected his own experiences to his philosophy.Read the First Chapter
By DAVID S. REYNOLDS
William James, America’s most famous philosopher, brother of the novelist Henry James, has never seemed so vulnerably human as in Linda Simon’s biography ”Genuine Reality.” Drawing innovatively from the vast correspondence of the James family, Simon portrays a troubled, gritty man whose philosophical vision grew directly from private travail.
Many of James’s psychological problems, as Simon shows, stemmed from his vexed relationship with his aloof yet controlling father, Henry James Sr., a writer and lecturer who failed to gain the prominence enjoyed by his friend Ralph Waldo Emerson among American thinkers. When he was 33 years old, he suffered the first of several mental breakdowns that sent him searching for relief to such optimistic theories as Fourierism, Transcendentalism and, ultimately, Swedenborgianism. Financially secure through family money, he and his wife divided their time between Manhattan and Newport, R.I., exposing their five children to American high culture. But dissatisfaction with the United States impelled them repeatedly to take the family for long stays in Europe. For two of their children, William and Henry, this peripatetic life style bred cosmopolitanism and expansive creativity. For the others — Alice, Robertson and Wilkinson — it fostered rootlessness and confusion. For all of them, it set the stage for periods of emotional instability in adulthood.
. . .
His father’s nervous shuttling between the United States and Europe was duplicated in his own equally frenetic country-hopping. His father’s embrace of supposed cure-alls was repeated in his anxious groping for spiritual and physical rescue among the offbeat fads of the day.
One of the delights of ”Genuine Reality” {{the book}} is its dogged pursuit of James while he rummaged among would-be panaceas. Surprisingly, in light of his reputation as an empirically scientific philosopher, James was deeply fascinated by spiritualism. Although he disdained the transparent theatrics of run-of-the-mill mediums, he harbored a faith that the dead could contact the living. When his friend Frederic Myers was about to die, James asked him to send messages from beyond the grave. To his disappointment, no messages ever came.
If Myers failed him, the psychic Leonora Piper did not. James and his wife first sought out Piper for spiritual consolation shortly after the death of their second child, Herman. Stunned by her apparently otherworldly powers, James made her a special object of study, consulting her regularly and reporting on her to the Society for Psychic Research, an organization for paranormal studies. Even when Piper, tired of being analyzed, publicly denied having spiritual gifts, James did not lose faith in her, as did many of his colleagues.
Spiritualism was merely one of many current phenomena that fascinated him. When bothered by heart trouble, he took doses of a new compound extracted from the lymph glands and testicles of goats. When struck by back pain, he applied a galvanic battery to his spine. To combat depression and insomnia, he consulted mind-cure therapists and faith healers. To gain insight into abnormal mental states, he tried mind-expanding drugs like hashish, mescal and opium.
Simon recounts such wide-ranging experimentation on James’s part without ever giving the impression that he was loony or irresponsible.
David S. Reynolds is a Distinguished Professor of English at Baruch College and the City University of New York Graduate Center. His books include ”Walt Whitman’s America” and ”Beneath the American Renaissance.”
This William James was the grandson of a “captain of industry” who’d come from Ireland to the US in 1789, as described (from first chapter of the Linda Simon book, link from the book review above).
IN THE LATE 1800s, the trip from Cambridge, Massachusetts, to Syracuse, New York, was long, convoluted, and uncomfortable. But it was a trip that William James {{the father of American Psychology discussed above}} undertook regularly in his role as overseer of the James family property. He traveled to Syracuse at least once a year, often more; and whenever he went, he had money on his mind. For himself and his siblings, a few stores on Salina Street, owned by the family since the eighteenth century, meant mortgages and repairs, bankers and agents, and most of all, rent. The Syracuse property supplemented James’s income, subsidized his travels, had helped pay for the publication of his first book, and always served as a reminder of his origins.
He was descended from one of America’s richest men, a captain of industry so wealthy that, rumor had it, only John Jacob Astor exceeded his fortune. Then as now, wealth meant power, and the first William James, grandfather of our philosopher, was a powerful man: restless, decisive, fiercely willful. He believed, with unwavering certainty, that money and power reflected a man’s ultimate achievement. . . .
Yet James’s private and public writings are peppered with metaphors drawn from the world of business, and he strived, with no apology, to shape his publications for the marketplace. His philosophical works, focused as they are on questions of free will and human potential; his personal struggles with power and authority; and his anxiety about his self-worth suggest his affinity, by more than blood, with his grand and looming patriarch. The first William James, of course, did not consider philosophy a suitable occupation for any of his descendants. Family legend has it that he was known as “the Patroon.”
WILLIAM WAS EIGHTEEN when he emigrated from Ireland to America in 1789, twenty-two when he arrived in Albany, where he would make his fortune, take three wives, and sire thirteen children. His career as a businessman began when, with a partner, he opened a small store that sold tobacco and cigars. The shop soon expanded to include dry goods and groceries, but James was not satisfied with being a modest merchant. Shrewd, sharp, ambitious, he built a tobacco factory, leased and operated the saltworks of Syracuse, and, among many civic roles, served as first vice president of the Albany Savings Bank, director of the New York State Bank of Albany, and trustee of Union College. He was a significant force in the decision to build the Erie Canal, which established Albany as a major center of trade.

The establishment of independent (freestanding, as opposed to departments within universities) Schools of Professional Psychology leading to advanced degrees may have begun in 1969 with Nicholas J. Cummings‘ establishment of the California School of Professional Psychology (now absorbed into Alliant International University), He certainly takes claim for it here, and in a 2008 interview with psychotherapy.net, and with this claim to have educated half the psychologists in California.
Catch the lingo:
Robin M. Deutsch, Ph.D.is a psychologist and the Director of the Center of Excellence for Children, Families and the Law at the Massachusetts School of Professional Psychology (MSPP). She is the former director of Forensic Services of the Children and the Law Program in the Department of Psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital where she remains a consultant. She is Associate Clinical Professor of Psychology at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Deutsch is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison from which she also received her Ph.D. in counseling psychology.** As a therapist, consultant, custody evaluator, mediator, and parenting coordinator, her work has focused on the application of child development research to children’s adjustment to divorce and parenting issues, the evaluation of families involved in family change and management of high conflict divorce. Dr. Deutsch frequently speaks to interdisciplinary groups on complex issues in child custody disputes. She has provided training for Parenting Coordination throughout the country, Canada and Sweden, including the first Massachusetts training. Dr. Deutsch has published articles on the effects of high conflict divorce, the evaluation of domestic violence, Parenting Coordination,
**(Madison is also where AFCC claims its headquarters, currently, although it is not registered to do business as itself in the state, last I looked (2013) “high-conflict” and pushing parent coordination are AFCC “tells.” the former is to minimize the latter (notice “evaluation of DV” — usually to minimize or dismiss it) and as to parenting coordination, parents have begun to sue over it, and the Supreme Court of PA (as I’m recalling it) recently, and suddenly, eliminated the field by simply changing the administrative rules. See right side-bar)).
it is just a few clicks from the President of MSPP (Nicholas Corvino, Psy.D.) through his bio, hearing that he was “past-President” of the Society for Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis, clicking on that, and looking at its Leadership, to seeing that the FOCUS (newsletter?) editor is hailing from Saybrook (Eric Willmarth, Ph.D.). This is a certain set of cultural values (including Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis itself, which has religious overtones and in some religions is contraindicated, i.e., don’t do it..Practitioners often go into counseling or behavioral health and have a sense of “calling” about how to heal others..)….
So, this article is going to look at both incorporation and (as it’s also where I discovered some of the connections) the tendency for people susceptible to joining cults themselves to go into fields where they can access more vulnerable, traumatized, in-pain, or troubled individuals to help them, as they were themselves indoctrinated to do. This goes both ways (short-hand, “new age” and “Evangelical and/or Conservative Christian Fundie” and to me says — when zealous people looking to recruit others into a changed worldview are flooding into a field, we should reconsider whether that’s a good idea, or a bad idea.
However, I have to question why the timing of “corporation status revoked” with the timing of receiving more HHS funds to promote fatherhood, which comes up repeatedly, below.
(UPDATE from 2013) I found this individual cited as a lead presenter in “Disconnected Dads, Strategies for Promoting Responsible Fatherhood” courtesy “Policy Institute for Family Impact Seminars” (FIS) and a few other funders and panelists on the (long) publication… This 70pg document is highlights from a Washington D.C. conference hosted by then-Vice President Al Gore, and on page 1 cites the Charles Ballard organization.
Buckle your seatbelts, this is one of those rollercoaster posts, somewhere between thrilling, comical, and “we are not amused.” [End, 2013 intro…]
Remember the nonprofit from my last post, the one in Washington D.C. which got a bunch of grants (over $2 million) only has one public displayed tax return (that I can see), never got a DUNS# for its HHS grants, and eventually got its nonprofit revoked or failure to file? — this one?

One of whose Principal Investigators ended up on THIS one, which I’ve profiled before (herein):
“Women in Fatherhood Inc” which is ….
an organized voice of women with diverse perspectives and experiences. We are a national 501c3 comprised of women with direct or indirect professional involvement in the responsible fatherhood field. The mission of Women In Fatherhood is to contribute to and advocate for family and community well-being through the support of positive father involvement and healthy family relationships.
and on THAT board of directors, is:
>Frances Ballard:
“Frances Ballard is the Executive Director for the National Responsible Fatherhood Clearinghouse (NRFC). In her role she is responsible for the strategic direction and leadership for activities regarding the NRFC, including the coordination of the media campaign, clearinghouse and Web site, Training and Technical Assistance (T & TA) to responsible fatherhood demonstration sites, and building relationships and partnerships for NRFC. {{*1}} She has over 20 years experience working with fathers, families and healthcare. Her previous positions include 12 years serving as the Vice President and Chief Operating Officer for The Institute for Responsible Fatherhood and Family Revitalization (see below); Consultant to The Annie E. Casey Foundation’s Making Connections Program; Director of Corporate Development and Clinical Manager-Ambulatory Care, Grace Hospital; and Nurse Consultant/Program Developer, The Institute For Responsible Fatherhood and Family Development.** She holds a Masters of Science Degree in Nursing Administration, a B.A. in Social Work, an A.S. in Nursing, and numerous executive management certifications. She is married to Dr. Charles A. Ballard, “pioneer” of the Fatherhood Movement and the mother of their three children, Jonathan, Lydia and Christopher.”
**”The Institute For Responsible Fatherhood and Family Development” is an organization which got over $2 million of grants over several years, but then intentionally? let its corporate registration go unfiled and eventually was revoked by the IRS; Dr. & Mrs. Ballard were both “Principal Investigators” on HHS (grants) to this group, while the single tax return I found shows them on the board of Directors. This irresponsible behavior, as to filing, was then further rewarded by promotion — to the WIFI group, and from there to the HHS outfit mentioned above. This is apparently what HHS is doing in the marriage/fatherhood field.
My problem, you see, is that I actually read this stuff, look at it, say “HUH? What’s THAT?” and go find out.
I might have a much more peaceful life — and a lot less to think about — without going down that Rabbit Hole, but today I did. I do this because ignorance of what the US Government & certain large family foundations (i.e., private money – such as the Annie E. Casey Foundation) is supporting, and what it’s attacking, in short, what it’s DOING, is not bliss — not in the long term.
And I hate to say this, but it led to the something we have to discuss sooner or later, which is:
CULTS, and their CHARACTERISTICS
specifically, how did the USA, Inc. (and specifically here, HHS) — become one? Because — honest! — all I did is look things up. I look at organizations, and the people running them, and I read what they say. And before the end of this post, sorry to bring this up, but it leads right to:
[Broken link to image; blank space removed]
And I’m not talking, in general, vague principles of comparison. I’m talking personnel and graduate degrees. I already talked ultra-conservative Christian Pepperdine University CDRC centralized push through Mediation as the Norm in California (at public expense) and connect with Marriage/Fatherhood funding (right on the website).
I’m talking “Spiritual Psychology” Marriage and Family Therapists and the (then, very young) man who decided to expose one of these ex-Eckankar, ex-Scientology (or maybe not, depending on who you believe) and ended up dealing with not just a smear campaigns, but death threads, having his house ransacked, and now the guy doesn’t even keep a phone. But inbetween he was in Geraldo, you name it, and the question I have is — why are we paying, and tax-exempting — this stuff? Because, when you get right down to it — whether it’s Neopagan New Age (hypnosis, belly-dancing and Mind-Body Ph.D.s (distance learning, on-line) followed by Ph.D.’s in psychology, etc.– or Right-wing Reich (do away with no-fault divorce, exterminate the gays and especially hang the feminists)
It’s going to (I say) end up just about the same place: It’s going to end up in bed with you — or your kids (regardless of your age, gender, or marital status), demanding absolute loyalty, embezzling, and trying to sound very wise and spiritual.
And if it sounds much more dignified and organized (as the National Clearinghouse for Responsible Fatherhood does – most of the websites I’ve seen, for that matter, look Grrrr–eat) — it may be organized, but it’s going to boil down to about the same thing as any run of the mill cult. Only some are larger.
Outstanding in their Field. Now, about that Field… (Fatherhood Grantees/Practitioners)
Again, I am only sampling a field that was sent in place decades ago, has major foundations supporting it (one should ask WHY) as well as the many resources of the HHS, and the “yeah, man — right up our alley!” of one too many tax-exempt religious foundations. Or, as you will, faith-based.

Before we get too far into the economics of this field, I’d like to post a sample of what some of the DYNAMICS of it are about. This 2001 Appeal is interesting because it incorporates how the court responds to evidence of injuring a child on visitation and severe violence (breaking a woman’s sternum and grabbing her by the throat) — that woman being the 2nd wife // stepmother — and because the man in question is on the board of (another — not the above) Fathers’ rights group based in WDC (ACFC). This is one child — a girl, born in 1989 (divorce, 1991, first evidence of post-separation bruising of the girl, ca. 1996) and it covered two states, Michigan and Louisiana. It’s a short-double-spaced read, and I hope you do. Because at least in part — no offence to non-abusive Dads — this is also what the “FR’ movement is about — that FR are FR even when these things happen:
Lauren Hollingsworth v. James Semerad,
Appeal from 3rd Judicial District Court, Parish of Lincoln, Louisiana Trial Court No. 43,428~ Honorable R. Wayne Smith, Judge.
(Dad, see very far below same photo, looks like a very upstanding man):

Similar personnel to the ACFC group (far below) found on this one also: Baskerville, Semerad, Mike McManus (who wants to do away with no-fault divorce), etc. Click on link:
Dads of Michigan Related site, it says (read to see the spheres of influence involved & connection with another WDC organization, “ACFC”):
Rebuilding heterosexual marriage as the social norm is the necessary structural foundation for successful American socioeconomic reconstruction.
Among this testimony we can see both parents being court-ordered to attend a class, one of the (3) experts calling “parental alienation” but the testimony of the others (who felt the child to be credible, and not coached, esp. with the bruises) were concerned. Moreover, it appears that the same father had literally broken the stepmom’s sternum and grabbed her throat’ they were divorcing. he lied under oath about that event and had a new girlfriend to whom apparently the daughter was exposed. It appears that the court’s response is simply to adjust the supervised visitation, not terminate it! This Appeal in question comes fully 10 years after their divorce. Get the picture?
Seriously, it’s a short read and covers many typical issues in family court these days in a case which divorce pre-dated welfare reform but still had the PAS charge…
Who Can Measure, Quantify, AND Stop Federal Grants Fraud? And if No One, Then What?
[this post is approximately 12,000 words, most of it in tables or charts.
If you follow HHS matters, this is an eyeopener….
I am displaying / sampling HHS database dysfunction and dishonesty, which —
if more of the general public , I think actually knew about this database and looked at it
especially people actually ON welfare or people IN some of the programs aimed at them —
more would be upset about and start to comprehend the scope of the problem of “government.”
This post is essentially my notes, I didn’t format. If things extend past the right margin, hit “View/Zoom-Out (or “CTRL-hyphen” on some equipment)” until it doesn’t.
After displaying some of the missing or strange data fields, I also profile a few organizations, or track who’s running them, or did. For example, COAPP, NCJFCJ, Family Development, Inc., and just a few more.. This includes some tax return and corporate filing lookups….
A problem comes up when most of us don’t comprehend large numbers, or have a conceptual (mental image — I mean a relatively accurate one — of what money is, and how it moves electronically,
or over time. Failure to have enough independent people/groups who DO (and then act on it) is a recipe for slavery — let alone the topic of “abuse.”]
If I had a choice, 100% of the time I knew someone was deceitful, or defrauding me, I would cease doing business with them and go find better friends, associates, or if possible employer. That is, if they refused to correct the bad behavior.
Now — suppose that were the U.S. Government in all its main branches and tributaries, both ingoing and outbound? Then what?
Ay, that last choice can be a problem, because our economic system (here, USA) depends on enough people being highly invested in their jobs, highly enough such that leaving them was not an option.
And that is EXACTLY what the fake money / federal reserve / centralization of wealth (i.e., “income tax,” IRS, etc.) — represents. That, plus the two kinds of money — on the table, and under the table. The “table” generally speaking meaning any more that which was spread by the IRS (Internal Revenue Service) dividing things up into for profit, not for profit (foundation), and government.
The TAGGS.HHS.GOV data, even were it accurate and consistent (which it’s not) would still only represent outflow (payments).
Last post (and plenty of others), I showed examples of how the TAGGS database is not really usable to track the OUTFLOW of grants, and once it’s flown (or has flowed) out who really knows where it lands. And can quantify that enough to make a definite statement that something’s OK, or NOT OK? Can you?
I may elaborate a little more on this.
Beside this, also, what I’m actually looking at are only electronic entries in a database — I’m not seeing the books, receipts, or invoices of the groups it went to, am I? Suppose the electronic entry — and many (how many?) others was an error or a fabrication, and not tied to any real exchange of goods, finances, or services to a real entity?
And we say that a good portion of this country is not religious? There’s a lot of “take it on faith” on continuing to pour funds in (in the form of labor, taxes, setting aside for retirement funds and pensions, etc.) to this system in hopes, or wishes, or beliefs that what went in will be what came out, only maybe even compounded through the marvel of the extra clout of pooled funds, compound interest, and our leaders’ economic wisdom in planning for the future.
We don’t know what we don’t know, but I will say that my sense is that (definitely) the majority of the marriage/fatherhood grants are going to “Cronies” of HHS/Faith-based connections — and that the general game plan is to raise money by marketing the curricula, while also (for fun?) running cognitive behavioral health demonstration projects on as many people as possible. why else would they insist on limiting it to, really, so few curricula?
This category of expenses (payments) got supercharged with welfare reform // block grants to states. The purpose of this welfare reform (whatever it was sold as), I’ll assert is “Fees for Friends” and changing the basic form of government, towards the mental health model and away from the legal // justice model.
It removed accountability further away from individual families, and guess what — there’s stil a lot of talk about Medicaid fraud, HHS fraud — and billing services to particular, individuals’ (esp. KIDS) social security#s that don’t correspond to real services (or real cost of services) produced.
The following grants have no address, location, or DA#. They’re only (several million$$) –but those are just ones I happened to stumble on while looking at taggs.HHS.gov… And how many people even look at that database?
How to get No-Holds-Barred HHS Grants Info from TAGGS, and a Few Things to Do With It…
Notes from 2014 Year-end on this October 5, 2012 post:
1. This post has charts and tables in it, run before I had the technical know-how to limit the right-hand-margin.
2. I acknowledge the post is unconscionably long — 17,000 words, including this intro.
3. That said, The TAGGS database does not copy well to wordpress, and is not public-user-friendly. It does not lend to us running flexible reports or sorts, as database ought to, although it’s funded apparently with public dollars. Much later, I learned (this is “as I recall” in a 600++ post blog) the software provider was later taken over by an international (Canada?) based firm, but previous to this had been sued by states or state agencies for failures regarding their performance problems. I have worked with databases before, and know that this level of dysfunction in critical issues would not fly, in small, medium, or very large corporations. It’s so bad, I even started a blog in October 2013 intending to simply print out ALL recipients (unsorted). HHS Giveaways, Government Shutdowns.
HOWEVER, it was my work on grants using this database, and then checking out grantees, which developed my understanding of at least the marriage/fatherhood funding, and what a major problem we have in the country when the average citizens DO NOT understand government fiscal accounting, as we are not intended to. I believe that if we did, there would be a major rebellion over taxation in no way limited to political fringe or other labels, such as “Tea Party.” I encourage people to get involved and get a sense of just who IS getting HHS grants. Run some reports, scan the contents, notice oddities; notice who gets the big ones, or how many 1-time grantees, for example, may get a $50,000 “compassion capital” grant, then (checked at the state registration level) the group gets administratively dissolved, i.e., “take the money and run.” Continuing this practice rewards bad behavior, and allows grants fraud and theft of public money.

The World’s Largest Owner of Global Infrastructure is Broke Like Me, which must Explain the Lousy Data Entry ….
Sort of a fun post. Only the material isn’t really that funny because it’s real money — well, real US$$ — involved.
But as I’ve pointed out before, the “Bentley 500” does indeed state that the USA IS the world’s largest owner of global infrastructure,
Bentley Systems has compiled the Bentley Infrastructure 500 to help global constituents appreciate and explore the magnitude of investment in infrastructure and the potential to continually increase the return on that investment. The infrastructure value represented is over US$14 trillion, which is close to the U.S. annual GDP and to the combined annual GDPs of China, Japan, and Germany. Bentley itself is committed to enhancing ROIs through leveraging information modeling in integrated projects to create more intelligent infrastructure on behalf of owner organizations.

which would seem obvious — it’s the world’s largest per-capita jailor, right? and housing them requires a little real estate and infrastructure, right? — but how does this fit with also being hugely in debt if we own (well, the US owns) all that STUFF (dams, public projects real estate, utilities, etc.)….
And how can I explain for such a major investor, the not very intelligent infrastructure of the HHS database, TAGGS? Can’t they afford proofreaders or spellcheck software? Or maybe whoever does data entry needs regular lunch breaks. Or maybe things like this happen right after a too-long, too-liquid lunch break…. a LOT….

NEXT: SECTION ON NONPROFIT “INST FOR RESPONSIBLE FATHERHOOD….”
Here’s a spinoff? group with grants which bear the word “replication” and “evaluation” in them, but over an eight-year period, never got a DUNS# entered. I enclosed a few of its grants underneath the “Dun & Bradstreet Disclaimer” here. This group shows a total of $2.5 million grants — but got its nonprofit status revoked in 2010 for failure to file for more than three years in a row. And the board of directors on this one includes the “Who’s Who” among the field of fatherhood promotion, too!
Recipient EIN = 521867708
Showing: 1 – 1 of 1 Recipients
Note: One EIN can be associated with several different organizations. Also, one DUNS number can be associated with multiple EINs. This occurs in cases where Dun and Bradstreet (D&B) has assigned more than one EIN to a recipient organization.

“HALF THE SKY FOUNDATION (Hearst Ave, Berkeley, CA) Sure has some Heavenly Globetrotting Partners
[This email is a reaction/response to hearing who is
sponsoring the rescue of girls and young women half a globe away,
while I know too much about what’s happening to them in the USA.
Very tired/stressed today and probably not that great a post. But the material in it is relevant.]
Why is it the rich, famous, and well-networked are always ready to globe-trot and help women & children in other countries, while ignoring what the same organizations they network is doing to women, women’s rights, children (boys and girls both), human rights, individual rights, and just about anything that the right to be extorted by our own government — in the USA?
Last night on TV, again the international journalists were helping girls in poverty and illiteracy in other countries; and these girls deserve help. Digital storytelling definitely gets a boost when Meg Ryan, or Gabrielle Union (with a clip from Hillary Clinton — whose husband in 1996 signed a welfare reform bill which undercut American mothers’ safety and self-sufficiency in favor of marriage & fatherhood programming!) can make a work of art out of the drama of survival half a globe away:
