Happening NOW: Locally and Within the USA, Matching Nonprofits to Legal Entities and Tracking Them Remains at Best (for Most) a Messy, Expensive and Unreliable Process, But Internationally — More Streamlined, Monitored, and Standardized for Faster, Easier, and More Profitable Trade. See FSF, FSB (G20-formed, 2009), LEI Legal Entity Identifier [global database + system], GLEIF (Swiss Foundation), LOUs (who issue LEIs) and ‘KYC’ (Know Your Customer) [Publ. This smaller one is now (but wasn’t originally — this time, “Foundation Center” database seems to have gotten the various names right, for a change — and it organizes volunteers, while the other org. pays its (few) officers’ salaries. IN FYE2015, the primary activity was granting over $600K to the James Beard Foundation. It also organizes volunteers to “beautify” (clean up) public areas in the city — better for tourism, obviously (and, secondarily, Chicagoans). Meanwhile on the other org, the salaries of the officers and directors just keep increasing…and the IRS forms I checked show major internal inconsistence (indicating lack of oversight by the public ON those returns, probably). See more below on the post.
