This post was started 10/22/2016, but by Nov. 16, 2016 had not yet been published. Hopefully today’s that today or within a few days….While it began with the title on the posts, as the “tags” reflect, other topics came up in association.
A middle section here deals with other organizations, but the overall topic is the same: Watch out for coordinated-purpose foundations with a unique obsession for re-developing the nation’s (and other nations’) public schools through pouring funds into them, funds which will be hard to track.
The Bridgespan Group (tax returns and quotes from them, as well as from its website below) in particular as a brainchild of Bain & Company [Funding Universe history page] (see also Bain Capital [Wikipedia] for the Mitt Romney Component and Boston Consulting Group [Funding Universe history page; BCG spun off as consultants from Boston Safe Deposit and Trust Co.] from which Bill Bain’s investment management/consulting model spun off] should put public perception on “alert” as much as a new US President and who is the cabinet. These activities have been under process for decades now, and all of them are going to impact the economy, the present and future workforce, and most at stake here — the degree of accountability for use of public resources when private groups are seeking to steer the ship.
Putting dates (1960s, 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, this century) to some of those key events, and names to the key personalities WILL be time well invested (even those three links above) understanding how they have operated in the for-profit sector, and are now operating also in the not-for-profit sector. You will also pick up a general sense through continued readings on these topics, of who the public is dealing with when such organizations decided to focus coordinated efforts on the public school system as a whole. Gail T.P. Wickes @EDC (since 1973) made some serious ripples as Gail Thain Parker, 1st woman President of Bennington College, VT. Part of issue behind her resignation dealt with her “futures” plan to rescue it financially; she said, too many tenured professors. I can see why, if there is a connection, Ted Sizer at CES and/or Brown U. might want her. See published books.

I looked up the almost-NO women-on-the-board (@1972) articles of incorporation and put some urls on the image.
Among them, Gail Thain Parker (now “Gail T.P. Wickes” as Harvard BA & PhD but was -briefly – the youngest women college president in the US, and first one of Bennington College, VT, with her (then-husband). It didn’t go well. She was only 29! EDC still lists her, says, on its board since 1973 (before her time at Bennington), and now is a stockbroker].
For example, here’s for year 2010:[June2017 Update note: that link is a generic, not a saved search, and no longer valid. Despite looking again through some of the key personnel (other MA corporations they ran) and earlier (and revealing) EDC returns, I DNR what I was looking at, this time. I did see William DeJong listed as just 1 of 5 contractors (paid bout $59,000) in FY2001 or 2002; I’ve blogged DeJong’s since on FamilyCourtMatters). I would like to know what the reference was, but for now, do not. Tax Years Fiscal Years 2002 + 2001 from 990Finder (FoundationCenter) have financial statements attached; 2001 has a schedule of contracts and pass-through federal agencies. Neither particularly explains what they do on the Form 990 “Program Service Accomplishments” page in those years, and Highest Paid Subcontractors” omit contact addresses, or even state/country info). EDC’s Gov’t grants (see Scheds A) escalated by millions, yearly 1998-2003 at least. I AM ADDING 5 IMAGES from EARLIER EDC IRS RETURNS, 2 show its highest paid contractor, all show avoidance tactics (disrespectful to the public) in filling out Forms 990. Nov. 13, 2016 update. I have left some footprints behind in its place though about the Wingspread Conference of 2007, and about the family / foundation that had that Frank Lloyd Wright conference center built, which has become a National Historic Landmark and a source for international meetings since 1958.

That post is next priority to post, ideally by 11/15/2016. I discovered that a Johnson heir was recently (within the last decade) accused of molesting his teen-aged stepdaughter repeatedly over a three-year period (ages 12 – 15), complicating prosecution in Racine, Wisconsin which apparently was virtually a company town (The family even owns a Bank on Main street named after themselves). He got off with 4 months and less than a half-slap on the wrist, for your typical billionaire. That (my friends) is one reason this intro rather expanded, in addition to pointing out the ongoing influence of yet another major global-corporate-empire family, and a particularly “We’ll keep this under private control” one also.
This famous home doesn’t appear to have been opened to visitors other than the Conference Center attendees (family hadn’t lived there since the 1950s) until perhaps Sept. 2014, when this article announced that “Wingspread” would be added to the S.C. Johnson “Racine Campus” (another Frank Lloyd Wright design) tours. This implies that in the meantime, it wasn’t really open for tours. Although being a National Historic Landmark since 1989, perhaps somehow it was. Notice all the Johnson family names (forebears) being dropped by one of the current scions.
